Algebra 2

Welcome to Mr. Liftig’s Algebra 2 Class!

Block 3A and 3B: Room 107

Email: [email protected]

Phone:  (203)-239-1641 Ex. 2107

Objective: The objective of the course is to continue your study of Algebra focusing on a variety of different functions and transformations of these functions. The course continues to explore quadratic and exponential functions, and introduces higher degree polynomials, rational functions, and  logarithmic functions. This course will also focus on skills, strategies, and practice for the SAT taken during your junior year.

Requirements: Algebra is a challenging and engaging subject. Its study requires a good attitude, a desire to learn, and persistence when encountering new ideas and approaching problems. Every challenge and mistake presents an opportunity for new learning. Hopefully by now in your mathematics career you know we tend to learn the most by trying, making mistakes, struggling, and then overcoming those mistakes. In this course  you must be willing to make those mistakes and to learn from them.

Material: Please make sure that you are prepared to write and take notes each class. This entails having a pencil ready and either a notebook or a binder to put notebook paper in. Please have your chromebook charged and ready for each class.

Calculators/Apps:

This year we will be using the classroom TI-84 calculators. We will also be using Desmos (www.desmos.com) and Equat.io as a computer math writing tool. Most assignments will be posted via google classroom, we will be using desmos activities, google forms, ed puzzle, khan academy and edulastic as well as potentially other resources.

Grades:

Completion Based 15% - HW - Graded for completion (sometimes collected). Paper/GoogleClassroom/Desmos/Khan Academy

Standard Based Assessment: 25%

Each quarter will have a set of key concepts (Standards) that will be assigned grades that reflect your level of proficiency and understanding each will be assessed on a scale of 1 to 5. This is assessed by our daily warm ups, our other assignments, quizzes and tests but can be re-assessed to improve your score throughout the course of the quarter.  There may be 6 to 8 per quarter depending on pacing.

Accuracy Based -60% Total points

Quizzes - Around 30 points (20 to 40)

Tests - Around 80 points

Exploration Activities 5 to 10 points Projects 15 to 20 points

Part of your grade for each quarter is calculated by a “Total Points” system. What this means is that every assignment we do has a certain number of points, and for each assignment you earn all or some of those points depending on how well you did. Your grade for the class is all of the points you earned divided by all of the points it was possible to earn (not counting extra credit problems) the percentage is then your quarter grade.

Extra Help:

I am available on Wednesdays and Thursdays for extra help after school and other days by appointment.

Attendance:

Please review the school’s attendance policy for questions relating to attendance. It’s always a good idea to give me a heads up if or when you are out to make sure you have any necessary materials. Most of our work will be posted to google classroom.

These are the topics we will be studying this year

Unit 1: Functions

Unit 2: Quadratics

Unit 3: Polynomials

Unit 4: Rational functions

Unit 5a: Exponential Functions

Unit 5b: Logarithmic Functions

Unit 6: Trigonometry

Standards of Mathematical Practice

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
