The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) oversees the National Honor Society chapters in high schools and middle schools throughout the United States.  The criteria for membership include  scholarship, leadership, character, and service.  Please review the National Honor Society Scoring Rubric below.

In order to be invited to apply Junior or Senior Year, the student must have:

  • Scholarship
Cumulative grade point average of 4.0.
  • Service
Minimum of 90 community service hours.
This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Service must be documented by the guidance office and viewable on PowerSchool by March 1st (Juniors) or October 1st (Seniors) of the year of application in order to be considered.  Please see the National Honor Society Community Service Hours Memorandum for updates regarding COVID-19.

Once invited to apply, in addition to the previously mentioned criteria, students must also demonstrate the following in order to be accepted and inducted into the North Haven Chapter of the National Honor Society:

  • Leadership
Character rating of a “3” or better on the NHS scoring rubric, which corresponds to a minimum of two leadership credits. See NHS Leadership Information Form  for more information.  The North Haven Chapter defines leadership as:
“ …actively organizing and guiding individuals through sustained initiatives that result in the betterment of the community while having a positive influence on others.”
Leadership units are typically measured in one-year increments, entire courses, or an equivalent duration.  Paid positions do not constitute leadership for the National Honor Society.  For additional information, please consult with the National Honor Society Advisors, Carla DeStefanis and Jennifer Zettergren.
  • Character
Character rating of a “3” or better on the NHS scoring rubric.
Students must be of good character and uphold principles of morality and ethics, demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability, and show courtesy, concern, and respect for others.  Character is assessed by three current academic teachers of the prospective candidate.  The student is responsible for asking these three teachers to complete the Google Survey and following through with this task.
