Community Service FAQS

Why is community service important for me?

The NHHS community service requirement has vocational and social benefits. Volunteering to help others is important and essential in building character and compassion. Equally important, it allows one to give back to the community by supporting the work of a valuable local organization.

Serving others aligns with the North Haven Public Schools Vision of a Graduate. As seen in the graphic below, the Vision includes not only the academic “competencies” of problem solving, collaboration, communication, and informed thinking, but also the character-related “dispositions'' of self-direction, diligence, empathy, emotional intelligence, and civic engagement. By touching on all of these dispositions, community service is a great way to build and demonstrate these essential qualities of mind. It also provides a range of experiences well-suited to one’s disposition journals, which are also required for graduation.

VOG

North Haven High School students graduation requirements include hours of community service by year, reflecting the reduced opportunity to engage in community service during the pandemic:

  • 25 hours for the Class of 2023
  • 30 hours for the Class of 2024
  • 40 hours for the Class of 2025 and beyond.

Where are some places that I can volunteer at if I do not know where to start?

If you do not have a particular community service-based site or organization to begin service, please look at the recommended sites that are listed below. These sites are located within the North Haven area and offer a variety of community service interests that may serve as a great "starting off point" in beginning your volunteerism journey. Please be sure that the sites you select are non-profit organizations. A non-profit organization is a group organized for purposes other than generating profit and in which no part of the organization's income is distributed to its members, directors, or officers.
