Objective:

This course is intended to prepare you to take the math sections on the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT. This course covers test strategy and pacing, test structure, the mathematical content and concepts covered, as well as provides structured practice to help you score as well as possible.

Material:

We will alternate between some paper SAT practice and computer practice. Please bring both a pencil and a chromebook to each class.

Calculators/Apps:

This year we will be using the classroom TI-84 calculators as well as the desmos graphing calculator application/website. On the paper calculator allowed section the TI-84 is permitted. On the current online version for CT SAT school day both the TI 84 as well as desmos calculator (provided in the testing client) are allowed.

Class Structure:

Each class (with several exceptions) we will begin with 10 minutes of practice in your individual SAT packets.

Next we will have about 10 minutes of group time where each student will choose 1 problem for the group to discuss/focus on. This may be a problem that was tricky, interesting, or just stood out in some particular way.

We will then transition to whole class instruction where I will present different topics and strategies.

The Group will be divided into two sections and most days the switch over time will be at 8:15

Each quarter we will take 2 full SAT Math Section practice tests. We will also have periodic 10 questions check ins to monitor student progress and identify areas of strength and areas to work on.

Grades:

Participation 4 points a class about  20 per quarter

Each day you will earn a grade for participating in each segment of the class 1 point for individual practice, 1 point for group, 1 point for engagement in the whole class lesson, 1 point for conference or on task work at the end of class.

Reflections 1 per week about 8 per quarter

10 points each

Check in Improvement:

40 points per quarter

Students earn these points by either meeting the target goal or showing one “band” of growth from their initial assessment. For students not meeting goals or showing band growth, these points can be earned through creating and following through on a practice plan.

Attendance:

Please review the school’s attendance policy for questions relating to attendance. It’s always a good idea to give me a heads up if or when you are out to make sure you have any necessary materials. Most of our work will be posted to google classroom.
